Shared staff meeting - TAS

The Share aspect has changed a lot with the introduction of technology.

How to get sharing to crowds
Powhiri to Facebook - both the digital and traditional worlds come together so that we are able to connect

Important that students understand the kaupapa around Learn Create Share. The results are showing that students are more prepared for secondary and that writing is more natural.

Need to look at Summer Learning Journey. The data shows that those who are doing this are making gains in their learning over the school holidays.

Actions
The deal is to get the students blogging and sharing and making this as natural as possible.
Summer Learning Journey
Whanau Engagement - hold some hui
Need to 'up' our posting - 3 times per week for it to make significant effect.

Boys Group

Boys Group 2019

There are four boys that are doing projects outside of the classroom. We started trapping at Rangikapiti Pa as part of the restoration project. Every week we head upto the Pa and check our traps. Most weeks we catch rats. This is a good time for relationship building, having a korero about the week and reinforcing our school vision of Nga Rangatira mo Apopo.

On Thursday we work in the school gardens. Initially this involved raising seeds, weeding, digging over the soil and collecting seaweed.

Then we started involving other classes and getting them to help us. This was the first stages of taking the lead. We also decided that we needed to purchase more traps as our rat traps were getting a bit rusty and need of replacement so we had a sausage sizzle and raised some money for this.

The big event was Rangikapiti Planting day where we went up to the Pa site and dug holes for a couple of hours. Then on Thursday the whole school came up and planted trees. The boys had created a video that explained how to 'plant a plant'. They supported students most of the day giving them advice on how to plant their trees. After each group left they went back and checked each tree. They took a big step in leadership and were successful.

At the end of Term 2 these boys had in total 30 recorded incidents on Student Management System. This term so far they have 10. There has been lots of progress. Mosts days they are more settled and a great part of the Mangonui School whanau. They just loose it every now and again so an obvious next step is working on those coping strategies when life does not go our way.

Ubiquitous carries the idea that learning takes places outside of the traditional school/classroom in the digital era

Traditional teaching/learning was constrained to the 9-3 school day
Our own data and knowledge of priority learners supports this notion of Ubiquitous learning

ie. If our learners arrive at school at 5 years of age, already 30 million words behind
(remember the research: decile 1 kids have HEARD 30 mill less spoken words by school entry than a decile 10 kid)

Time to reflect and share with colleagues one more time

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Allowing for learning to take place 24/7. There has to be balance. For example I do not want my boys to miss out on the outdoors because they are expected to be looking at a screen. I want them to participate in sport, be social and connect with Papatuanuku. Digging a hole for a tree is as important to me as doing writing for school. I get the philosophy and totally respect it but we always need to keep in our heads we are from the Far North and we are a little bit different to the rest of Aotearoa..... lets keep it that way.

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa today - specifically empowerment?
That we live a world where we can use the digital device to give our whanau more opportunity to be empowered. Prepare our students for a world where we do not know what the jobs may look like but know they will require creativity and an ability to use tools that will unleash the creativity.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
A better understanding of the digital curriculum. I really like the thinking behind it as it is about creating.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Scratch is going to be the class on Friday. I am not sure why I dropped coding. I have always believed that our students should know this language. That is should be part of any literacy program. Scratch is way better than what it used to be. I also want to focus on green screen as another tool for the students to use. There are so many ways that this could be used especially enhancing movies

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Not really a lot today. I think it will have added a lot more as there is so much I want to do! Scratch, Green screen, I STOP MOTION

DFI 2 Enabling Access

Enabling access: Agenda Day 6, Northland Cohort 2: 2019

h

Visible

Can our learners see it - simple as that
Making learning visible to our whanau

This is what we were talking about at our last night staff hui. Are we clear about expectations at each achievement level. Do whanau know what this looks like. Need to make it accessible and visible.

We need to make sure that the learning is not hidden from students and whanau. We have in the past. Our google sites need to provide plenty of opportunities for learners how to get it right.

Formative practices where we use WALT etc was the first step to visibility. With digital we can make this a game changer where everything is laid out - turbo chargers the classroom

No Surprises! Keep me updated. Let me know what is going on. This is at the heart of our most effective teaching practice.

Using blogs where students define or create examples of what they are learning to teach others.

In conclusion: The concern we have is that we could lock parents out by using passwords. We need to make sure that this does not create a barrier. We want to bust apart the privacy, so visibility is the norm.

Learn - Rules to create a great site

What is the purpose of the site?  Who is the site for?
  • Get student feedback and buy in.
  • If using a theme, keep it throughout your site
  • 3 click rule (make it easy for students to access
  • Mirror your drive folders to your site pages.
  • Always check permissions
  • Think Multi-Modal
  • Image carousel

Google Sites

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy and Visible learning?
Visibility - What Dorothy had to say around keeping our learning visible. Can our learners see it get access to it. That we live in this digital age where we can make this totally possible. We talked last night at staff meeting about the feedback we got from a survey from whanau on reporting. It highlighted that parents want to know more about the levels that their children are working at or should be working at. We need to use the digital connection to make this possible. Not that hard to do. As teachers we need to make sure that we make our sites another place of learning. Somewhere where students can go to for learning. Remove any barriers.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Google sites and having time to work on my school site. The more you do it the more you use a range of tools to get the outcome you want. The visibility korero this morning has made me really think about how I can make what we want as outcomes in our classrooms more visible to teachers and whanau.

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Looking at blogs this morning from other sites picked up some ideas around screencastify and other ways of sharing information with students.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Once I get the Mangonui School site up and working and I am at a stage that I only need to add and refresh (so it is a living document) then this will make my life a lot easier.

Learn: Cyber safety - Digital Footprint

Create: ScreenCastify

What did I learn that increased my understanding of the Cybersmart curriculum within the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

There is a lot of online support for supporting the implementation of a solid cyber safety curriculum throughout the school. As a school we need to look at how we have an ongoing programme running that flows with the learning of the day.

Cyber-Safety Curriculum

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Screencastify. I have had it looking at me, completed an online course and only used this digital tool today. A great tool for sharing learning, deepens the whole process. Could also see it used as a way to connect with whanau and give them strategies to use at home. We are looking at developing a new strategic plan - this would be used in 'Digital whanau connections'

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Keeping our kids safe online. I have always believed in the concept of supporting our students to become kind and caring cyber citizens rather than monitoring every step they take online. Yes you need systems in place but it should be more about growing the cyber-citizenship. Kids have access to the internet from so many different sources, take one away they will find another. We will review and renew our cybersafe programme using the tools and resources from today.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Shortcuts! Thanks they will make the workflow better.

Blogs allow us to practice internet safety and working out what is right and what works best. We are still learning.

The Hook - Authentic Audience
How do we take advantage of YouTube with online safety as a tool to share our thinking - To become YouTubers

Sharing with Purpose - Started with the books and teacher feedback - very narrow
Audience - gives purpose for writing - bring that thinking into the students work when they blog
Getting message to whanau - You are an authentic audience - You can engage with your childs learning through blogger
Create a post on FB for whanau to show them how to view student blogs
Share to finish learning - you can continue to work on mahi

Use Matariki and Learning Conferences to do a major push in connecting with blogs.

Time to reflect and share with colleagues

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Create within the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Lots of reminding about allowing students to be creative with the way they learn and share their thinking. This term I could have approached learning around 3 D shapes allowing the students to create a resource to teach others using google drawing and screencastify. That we need to ensure learning tasks have SiSoMo (Sight Sound Motion). I want to do some more reading around this but I think of my 3yr Old and how he learns, it is all exploring and asking lots of questions and giving him freedom.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Playlists with Youtube and developing resources that are specific tio our school.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Google slides and having students develop games / google draw for art / writing/ storytelling / animation. Lots of ideas to let the students be creative in the way they share their learning - The Create stage.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

What I did last week

Cleaned up Drive

Scavenger hunt with Tuatara, Kowhai - changed theme to tornado

Sent email out to change the way we do Matariki Celebrations with Learn Create Share

Trialed voice typing with Kotuku boys group

Google Group with Kowhai Class (I teach them each week)

Read other blogs

Yet to do:

Use Tables to organise work

Using writing voice tool - read from a book

What does Learn look like at our school? Can we define this? Effective Teaching Practice - What does it look like - The writing work we have done this term - MUST BE 'put together'

The day started with a powerful powhiri. The tauira sang beautifully and blew us all away. Clearly BOIC has massive heart and soul... kia ora.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

The big thing was thinking about what makes effective teaching in the 'digital world'. Thinking about making learning so that our students are able to access it 24/7. Teachers need to be able to capture those lessons and store them on a format so that students are able to view when required. I have always loved the SAMR as this ensures we are doing what we always COULD but in a different format.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
WOW!! Heaps - Love Google Keep this will be my new friend. I also will this week have a think how I want to set my emails so that I will achieve a better workflow.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Setting up google meet in holidays to catch up with students. Feedback from blogs was really powerful.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Day One - Digital Fluency Intensive

Introduction - Taipa Area School - Kia Ora Whanau it was a good way to start the DFI!

Origins of Manaiakalani

Decile 1a commmunity. Tamaki. Schools built closely so no child would need to buy a bike. Whole community is now undergoing major change with intensification of housing. Principals meet in 2006 and looked at results which were bad. Young people were not leaving college with the basic skills. Sat down and developed vision and goals.

Manakalani Goals
Motivate our learners to engage with the curriculum
Provide model for 21st century teaching and learning
work with learners to establish an authentic audience for their learning
empower our learners with an evidence based belief that their voice is powerful
raise achievement outcomes

Learn Create Share - Learn it   Create from it and then Share it!

Thinking during the day:
Learn Create Share with Literacy /  commitment from staff that using google apps in reading and writing - share stories, read out articles ,
Create a list of google tools

Need to establish partnership with whanau - what are we doing to achieve this?
- Student run workshops
- Newsletters?
- Regular FB posts
- Education around the pedagogy
Collect classroom emails and set up a google group
Do all our parents know how to access their childs mahi?
New Entrants - digital presence.

Google Groups
Easy to set up
google.groups.com
TAGS (Goggle Groups) and LABELS (Blogs) - mean the same thing

Contacts in gmail
Set up google group from contacts - only problem it is not collaborative
Google Groups
Setting up parent groups - sports teams etc

My Homework
Organising Drive with numbers so that most used are up the top of the list

Hints Google Doc's 101
When copying always go to Shift Control V - Do not copy and paste without formatting!!
Do not underline!
Voice Typing - Tools - Voice Typing - If boys cannot write then let them use voice -Ensure the principles of effective teaching are used in its introduction
Insert - Table of Contents

Assigning questions - Useful for students to ask questions on text for other students
Highlight the text that you have pasted (to show students where info is) and then ask a question about the text
Could be used for vocab, asking questions,

Reflection

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Learn Create Share. Want to look more closely at how we are partnering with our whanau to strengthen the Share aspect so it includes whanau. My thinking is that they do not understand the power of adding comments to blogs. We need to support our whanau into this.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

There are heaps of different tools that can be used to make life easier when working in Drive. I need to sort my files so that the ones I use regularly are easily located. Using a colour code will also be helpful. \
I want to look at how we use our newsletter using google documents. I use way too many words and need to use more images.
There are lots of ideas google 101

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I have started a google document that will be used for Matariki. It includes text, images and links to matariki sites. Students will be asked to read text and develop questions to ask others.
I want to also ensure that students feel confident using google docs and know some of the rules ie pasting. We assume they do. Will use a modified scavenger hunt
