Boys Group

Boys Group 2019

There are four boys that are doing projects outside of the classroom. We started trapping at Rangikapiti Pa as part of the restoration project. Every week we head upto the Pa and check our traps. Most weeks we catch rats. This is a good time for relationship building, having a korero about the week and reinforcing our school vision of Nga Rangatira mo Apopo.

On Thursday we work in the school gardens. Initially this involved raising seeds, weeding, digging over the soil and collecting seaweed.

Then we started involving other classes and getting them to help us. This was the first stages of taking the lead. We also decided that we needed to purchase more traps as our rat traps were getting a bit rusty and need of replacement so we had a sausage sizzle and raised some money for this.

The big event was Rangikapiti Planting day where we went up to the Pa site and dug holes for a couple of hours. Then on Thursday the whole school came up and planted trees. The boys had created a video that explained how to 'plant a plant'. They supported students most of the day giving them advice on how to plant their trees. After each group left they went back and checked each tree. They took a big step in leadership and were successful.

At the end of Term 2 these boys had in total 30 recorded incidents on Student Management System. This term so far they have 10. There has been lots of progress. Mosts days they are more settled and a great part of the Mangonui School whanau. They just loose it every now and again so an obvious next step is working on those coping strategies when life does not go our way.

Ubiquitous carries the idea that learning takes places outside of the traditional school/classroom in the digital era

Traditional teaching/learning was constrained to the 9-3 school day
Our own data and knowledge of priority learners supports this notion of Ubiquitous learning

ie. If our learners arrive at school at 5 years of age, already 30 million words behind
(remember the research: decile 1 kids have HEARD 30 mill less spoken words by school entry than a decile 10 kid)

Time to reflect and share with colleagues one more time

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Allowing for learning to take place 24/7. There has to be balance. For example I do not want my boys to miss out on the outdoors because they are expected to be looking at a screen. I want them to participate in sport, be social and connect with Papatuanuku. Digging a hole for a tree is as important to me as doing writing for school. I get the philosophy and totally respect it but we always need to keep in our heads we are from the Far North and we are a little bit different to the rest of Aotearoa..... lets keep it that way.

The new DT curriculum is how to design our own digital solutions and become creators of, not just users of digital technologies.

There are different types of coding fit for different purposes.

On Friday going to start with scratch. Start some coding with them and give them the create buzz. Going to also start I Stop Motion. Have wanted to do this for a while so great to be re energized after today.

Empowerment - it transforms the way we learn, offers uncharted experiences and opportunities

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa today - specifically empowerment?
That we live a world where we can use the digital device to give our whanau more opportunity to be empowered. Prepare our students for a world where we do not know what the jobs may look like but know they will require creativity and an ability to use tools that will unleash the creativity.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
A better understanding of the digital curriculum. I really like the thinking behind it as it is about creating.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Scratch is going to be the class on Friday. I am not sure why I dropped coding. I have always believed that our students should know this language. That is should be part of any literacy program. Scratch is way better than what it used to be. I also want to focus on green screen as another tool for the students to use. There are so many ways that this could be used especially enhancing movies

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Not really a lot today. I think it will have added a lot more as there is so much I want to do! Scratch, Green screen, I STOP MOTION
