Ngati Kahu PD session 1

 Homework:

Reread Preface: Understand that this has been written so tamariki have the information. It is the history of the fight for justice.

Notes

On the Maps pages it shows the 15 marae, it shows places of significance waitapu

Tumoana arrives from Rangitea rather than Hawaiki although this is debated amongst Maori. In the islands they have the stories of Tumoana and state that he came from there. It could have been a stop off point we do not know. Tumoana goes to the Hokianga and eventually moves to Tauroa then to Kohanga (Shipwreak Bay).

He departs back for home from Tauroa and tells Kahutianui that he will let her know when he arrives (he was an old man by this stage). His signal was 3 waves Long sweeping wave (roa), Huge high wave (nui) and another that came right up onto the land (paewhenua) a strike of lightening (the mark can still be seen at Kohanga) and a whirlwind - these were the tohu.

We know the story of Te Parata and how only Rangitira were allowed on the Mamaru (Ranga - weave. Tira - group). He came to Kohanga and meet Kahutianui. They stayed for a while until Kahutianui and her brother fell out. They moved Motu-o-pae Murimotu, Maraewhiti where Te Whanau Moana was born. They moved onto Karikari where the big Wheke blocked their path, came around Waipapa, Rangiawhiao (navigate in 1 day) Whatawhiwhi, this is where they found a channel that lead them around Puwheke(Te Rorohui) where Parata stayed a long time and then eventually to Taipa (Te Rorohui). Kahutianui and Parata spilt with Parata starting a relationship with his mother in law Kahukuraariki

Addition to the story of Parata. When he was given the Tinana he made substantial changes to it. In particular was the sail which he made to be able to catch more air - he ra - flat sail

Komamaru - Bend in the sail due to taking so much air

Komaru - slicing through the sea

Tauparara - The taupararpara in the book just explains that Ngati Kahu is spread wide from Wainui at Ahipara to Wairoa in Dargaville

Piko mai te taku manu, kake mai  taku  manu, te taha o wainui, te taha o wairoa, ka tu rupe ki tai, ka whakakiki, ka whakakaka, Nau mai, piki mai, haere mai.

1850 many hui held to discuss Maori law so this would not be lost by the pressures of Pakeha / church etc

Mana is handed down by the gods to humans.. They must do everything in accordance to that spiritual power.

The creation story explains how Io the supreme being (not human/ parentless) over many aeons (100000 years) fertilised Te Po giving 'Mauri' life

Io then brought about the first gods Papa and Rangi. Rangi would not let go of Papa so Io sent rebellian down and all tyhe gods except Tawhiri turned on Ranginui and sent him up to the sky. Tane then took Ranginui place and had many brothers with many different roles. Maori believe they come from Papa so therefore they are part of the earth, not above, not below but connected. Therrfore you cannot be separated from from your whenua as you are Mana Whenua. Your job is to be the caretaker. Your Mana depends on how well it is cared for. Example the rahui at Maitai Bay. But you cannot walk into another hapu whenua and exercise authority.

Anyhow

Tane then created the first human hine-ahu-one they had a daughter called Hine Titama who Tane also had a child with. She found out and became the caretaker of the portal between life and death Hine-nui-te-po.

Tikanga is Maori law. It is very flexiable. Before hui they will debate the tikanga for the meeting etc.

Tiaki - look after

kai - doer of the action

Rangatiratanga

Ranga - shoal of fish

raranga - weave

tira group of people

Whanaungatanga - Developing relationhsips

Shared staff meeting - TAS

The Share aspect has changed a lot with the introduction of technology.

How to get sharing to crowds
Powhiri to Facebook - both the digital and traditional worlds come together so that we are able to connect

Important that students understand the kaupapa around Learn Create Share. The results are showing that students are more prepared for secondary and that writing is more natural.

Need to look at Summer Learning Journey. The data shows that those who are doing this are making gains in their learning over the school holidays.

Actions
The deal is to get the students blogging and sharing and making this as natural as possible.
Summer Learning Journey
Whanau Engagement - hold some hui
Need to 'up' our posting - 3 times per week for it to make significant effect.

Boys Group

Boys Group 2019

There are four boys that are doing projects outside of the classroom. We started trapping at Rangikapiti Pa as part of the restoration project. Every week we head upto the Pa and check our traps. Most weeks we catch rats. This is a good time for relationship building, having a korero about the week and reinforcing our school vision of Nga Rangatira mo Apopo.

On Thursday we work in the school gardens. Initially this involved raising seeds, weeding, digging over the soil and collecting seaweed.

Then we started involving other classes and getting them to help us. This was the first stages of taking the lead. We also decided that we needed to purchase more traps as our rat traps were getting a bit rusty and need of replacement so we had a sausage sizzle and raised some money for this.

The big event was Rangikapiti Planting day where we went up to the Pa site and dug holes for a couple of hours. Then on Thursday the whole school came up and planted trees. The boys had created a video that explained how to 'plant a plant'. They supported students most of the day giving them advice on how to plant their trees. After each group left they went back and checked each tree. They took a big step in leadership and were successful.

At the end of Term 2 these boys had in total 30 recorded incidents on Student Management System. This term so far they have 10. There has been lots of progress. Mosts days they are more settled and a great part of the Mangonui School whanau. They just loose it every now and again so an obvious next step is working on those coping strategies when life does not go our way.

DF1 Number 9 - The Final

Ubiquitous carries the idea that learning takes places outside of the traditional school/classroom in the digital era
Barriers are removed:
Time - 24/7 potentially ie the time of the child’s choice (Empowering the learner) The time of the teacher (adult

Ubiquitous carries the idea that learning takes places outside of the traditional school/classroom in the digital era

Traditional teaching/learning was constrained to the 9-3 school day
Our own data and knowledge of priority learners supports this notion of Ubiquitous learning

ie. If our learners arrive at school at 5 years of age, already 30 million words behind
(remember the research: decile 1 kids have HEARD 30 mill less spoken words by school entry than a decile 10 kid)

Time to reflect and share with colleagues one more time

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Allowing for learning to take place 24/7. There has to be balance. For example I do not want my boys to miss out on the outdoors because they are expected to be looking at a screen. I want them to participate in sport, be social and connect with Papatuanuku. Digging a hole for a tree is as important to me as doing writing for school. I get the philosophy and totally respect it but we always need to keep in our heads we are from the Far North and we are a little bit different to the rest of Aotearoa..... lets keep it that way.

The new DT curriculum is how to design our own digital solutions and become creators of, not just users of digital technologies.

There are different types of coding fit for different purposes.

The digital curriculum - authentic, compose, algorithms, create, programs  = scratch, code.org

On Friday going to start with scratch. Start some coding with them and give them the create buzz. Going to also start I Stop Motion. Have wanted to do this for a while so great to be re energized after today.

Empowerment - it transforms the way we learn, offers uncharted experiences and opportunities
Really powerful presentation that is what our whanau at school deal with, poverty!

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa today - specifically empowerment?
That we live a world where we can use the digital device to give our whanau more opportunity to be empowered. Prepare our students for a world where we do not know what the jobs may look like but know they will require creativity and an ability to use tools that will unleash the creativity.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
A better understanding of the digital curriculum. I really like the thinking behind it as it is about creating.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Scratch is going to be the class on Friday. I am not sure why I dropped coding. I have always believed that our students should know this language. That is should be part of any literacy program. Scratch is way better than what it used to be. I also want to focus on green screen as another tool for the students to use. There are so many ways that this could be used especially enhancing movies

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Not really a lot today. I think it will have added a lot more as there is so much I want to do! Scratch, Green screen, I STOP MOTION
